Is 58:9b-14; Ps 86:1-6; Lk 5:27-32

Who would pour themselves out to the hungry?
Who would spend time to eat with the outcasts?
Who would satisfy the desire of the afflicted?
Who would serve the broken and the lost?
What kind of king forfeits his throne to meet with the lowly?

I’m reminded of the pure humility that Jesus walks in. He stands completely right with the Father. Never leads with pride. He knows the One who sent him and trusts him without separation. Not looking towards himself. He’s gentle, and kind, and loving.

In Luke 5, there is the story of Jesus calling Levi to follow him. A tax collector. A “traitor” in the eyes of the Jews. An outcast to their systems. A sinner. Yet Jesus, in his kindness and in his humility, comes to meet with him and calls Levi to himself. And not only does he meet with him, but he eats with him. He celebrates relationship. He lavishes with abundance. Like a watered garden, like a spring of water whose waters never fail, like a fresh bubbling spring.

I can’t think of humility and not consider what Paul wrote to the community in Philippi:

Have this attitude in yourselves, which also was in Messiah Yeshua, Who, though existing in the form of God, did not consider being equal to God a thing to be grasped. But He emptied Himself— taking on the form of a slave, becoming the likeness of men and being found in appearance as a man. He humbled Himself— becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. For this reason God highly exalted Him and gave Him the name that is above every name. (2.5-9)

We get to walk in humility because we know the Humble One.
